All About Me
Hello. Welcome to Laguna Middle School. I am excited to return to Laguna as a teacher because I was once a student here back in the day when it was called Laguna Jr. High and we had three grades levels (7th, 8th, and 9th). I am thrilled to be able to work with the youth of San Luis Obispo.
So here is a little bit about me...I was born and raised right here in San Luis Obispo. I came into this works at Sierra Vista Hospital and have never looked back. I attended Teach School Elementary from grades K-6 before it later became a 4-6 GATE program. After competing elementary school, I took the school bus to Laguna Jr. High for three years where I was active in the band, jazz band, basketball and softball. After 9th grade promotion, I bicycled my way to SLOSH (San Luis Senior High School - at that time) for a while before getting my license and driving to school each day. I continued participating in the band and jazz band while getting in some time on the softball field. High school kept me busy as I also participated in the international club, ASB, and CJSF (California Junior Scholarship Federation). In addition, I participated in the Presidential classroom which gave me the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. for a week to see how our government is run. It was a fantastic opportunity that I will remember always. When I wasn't participating in various school clubs and activities, I was a member of the Edna 4-H club. I showed pigs and was a part of the cooking and photography groups.
Following high school graduation, I went off to college down to San Diego State University where I majored in Psychology. Right before graduation I started working at the La Jolla YMCA. I was a camp counselor and director for 2 1/2 years before deciding to go back to school to become a teacher. I returned to SLO and started taking classes toward needed to get into the teaching credential program at Cal Poly. I completed my credential in the fall of 1992 and went right into substituting for San Luis Coastal. For the next 2 1/2 years I subbed for the district in grades K-12.
In May of 1995, I was hired by Palm Springs Unified School District to teach 6th grade Math and Science at Raymond Cree Middle School (RCMS), Go Matadors! I jumped right into a classroom in May and got those students through the remainder of the school year after they had been subjected to a very tumultuous year. We finished the school year on a positive note and then the principal called me in to tell me that I had been moved in the EL program teaching 6th science, 7th EL (English learner) math and science along with 8th grade math and science. I inquired as to my move and she told me that I was the only teacher on campus certified to work with the English learners so the move was made. I then took on coaching the girls basketball team along with the coed softball team. During my second year of teaching I was given the yearbook class and it was a year of learning for me. I continued to work at RCMS for five years.
I returned to the Central Coast to take a first grade position at Santa Rosa Academic Academy in Atascadero, California, in the fall of 2000. I taught first grade for one year and second grade for three years. I was so happy to be home and more importantly I got to have my mom come to my classroom once a week as a volunteer. Oh how my students loved her!
Four years after teaching 1st and 2nd grade I went to work at San Lucas Elementary School, a K-8 school, about 75 miles from SLO, and I was back to teaching middle school having been hired for the self-contained 7/8 classroom teaching all subjects. I spent two years driving up to San Lucas each day, roughly 2 hours of driving in the car, and then I found out that my dad had cancer and I needed to be closer to home to help out.
After 15 summers of being a summer school teacher and principal, I was noticed by Mr. Anderson, the principal of Laguna Middle School, who asked me to interview for an EL teaching position. I interviewed for the position and now I am in my thirteenth year here at LAMS. The years have sped by but I enjoy each and every day with my students in both the EL classes and leadership program. The staff at LAMS is wonderful and I am lucky to be at such an amazing school.
I look forward to working with your children and hope they learn as much from me as I learn from them.
